2014 Convention Judges Training School

July 1 – July 5, 2014
See Beautiful Tennessee

Judging schools will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, and will again consist of morning and afternoon sessions. People interested primarily in growing and showing, but not necessarily in becoming judges are welcome to attend. The morning session, beginning at 9:30 a.m. is comprised of three parts: 1) a Novice class for those wanting to learn about the judging of gesneriads; 2) an Intermediate/Advanced class for accredited judges primarily interested in preparing for Senior judge exams; 3) A Workshop open to certified judges. (See details below.)

It is very important when registering for the school that you clearly indicate which one of the three morning sessions you want to attend. The afternoon session, beginning at 1:30 p.m. will combine all three morning groups for practice judging and discussion. Novice and Intermediate/Advanced exams will be available Wednesday late afternoon for those wishing accreditation as Gesneriad Society judges.

The registration fee for both morning and afternoon sessions of the school, except the Workshop, is $15, payable (both online and printed) when you register for convention. Workshop registration, limited to 25 certified judges, is an additional $10. Please note: No payments for judging school will be accepted once the convention is underway. Subscription renewals for Appraisal should be paid separately to Mary Lou Robbins, either through The Gesneriad Society’s website or by sending a check directly to her at 403 Mizdail Road, Hunlock Creek, PA 18621. Novices who meet all the requirements to become student judges must subscribe to Appraisal no later than September 30, 2014.

The Judges Interest Group will meet from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. All current Gesneriad Society judges and those interested in becoming judges are welcome to attend. A flower show critique, open to all who participated in judging or clerking the flower show will be held on Saturday, July 5, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

Judges Workshop

Have you ever thought about entering a design in the Convention Flower Show’s Challenge Class?  Our workshop this year will focus on the basic principles of design, mechanics, accessories, and plant materials that can be used. Karyn Cichocki and Jill Fischer, both respected designers, will lead the workshop and share their combined expertise with us.  All materials, including containers, will be provided and attendees will be expected to make a Challenge Class type, free-standing miniature flower arrangement. We will then discuss the Gesneriad Society’s arrangement score sheet and do a quick critique of all the arrangements. A display of all the exhibits made during the session will be set up for all convention attendees to enjoy.

In addition to the $15 judging school registration fee, there will be a surcharge of $10 for workshop registrants only, to cover the cost of materials. Workshop attendance this year is limited to 25 certified Gesneriad Society judges, so get your registration in early!
