2021 Convention News

Gesneriad Friends,

The Gesneriad Society Board of Directors has voted unanimously to cancel the 2021 Gesneriad Society Convention scheduled for Tacoma, Washington, due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. This decision was not taken lightly. The Board of Directors felt it was the prudent thing to do because of the unknown timing of an effective vaccine becoming available before then, the uncertainty surrounding travel, and the ability of the hotel to provide a safe environment for all convention activities. The Convention Committee is in discussions with the Murano Hotel in Tacoma and is working toward rescheduling the convention in Tacoma for 2022.

The Convention Committee has begun planning for a virtual convention to take place in the summer of 2021. In addition to an expanded virtual flower show, there are plans for online presentations from a number of speakers as well as other typical convention activities that will be available to all our members. Complete information about the virtual convention will appear in the first and second quarter 2021 issues of Gesneriads.

The 2021Virtual Flower Show will be open to all members of The Gesneriad Society. Complete details for an expanded virtual show are being worked on and will appear in the first quarter 2021 issue of Gesneriads. Photos taken between June 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021 will be eligible. We will be looking for photos that show as much of a plant as possible, so that the species or hybrid is easily recognizable. The photos may be of individual plants in pots, in a garden setting or in a natural environment. We will have a variety of classes so start taking your photos!

Stay safe and well,

Mel Grice, President
The Gesneriad Society Board of Directors
The Convention Committee — Jo Anne Martinez, Jeanne Katzenstein, Mary Helen Maran, Ron Myhr
