Episcia cupreata ‘Belize’

Episcia cupreata ‘Belize’, 2020, IR201516, registered by Ron Myhr, Canada. Parentage unknown, likely a chance seedling selection of Episcia cupreata, or a descendant of a wild collection. Fertile, reproducible only vegetatively. Growth habit starts as a basal rosette, with time developing multiple trailing stolons.  Leaves bright green, sometimes tinged with bronze on portions of the leaf surface, ca.20 cm long, ca. 7cm wide with ca. 3cm petiole, ovate with cuneate base, entire to crenate margin and acute tip. Calyx green, split, 10 mm long. Pedicel 2 cm long, 1-2 flower per leaf axil. Corolla salverform, 2.5 cm long x 2 cm wide, red/orange. It is somewhat similar to E. cupreata var. viridifolia and may be a descendant; very vigorous and stoloniferous it is tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions. Collected at Belize Botanical Gardens, where it was a cultivated plant of unknown origin. Belize is farther north than the known natural range of Episcia.
